Bhangra legend Kuldeep Manak passes away

A Tribute to Kuldeep Manak

The Punjabi music world has lost its biggest folk legendary singer, Kuldeep Manak. There will never be another singer, performer or person like Manak. Known for his big and powerful voice Manak gave us endless hits and was loved by young and old throughout the Punjabi diaspora.

A Tribute to Kuldeep Manak

“True maharaja of folk music is gone”

Punjabi music has lost one of the most iconic and legendary singers – Kuldeep Manak. This outstanding and powerful singer was and will always be a role model for Bhangra artists around the world. He has left a tremendous legacy of Punjabi folk and Bhangra music which inspires every singer to be like him as a singer and a person.

Manak at the age of 62 was still seen as a strong ambassador of the Punjabi and Bhangra music industry. He was singing and touring because singing was in his blood. However, his health recently over the last couple of years was not supporting his inner strength. Manak passed away on 30th November 2011 from Pneumonia during his stay in a hospital in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Manak’s health seemed to be stable in CMC hospital in Ludihana and his loss was not anticipated. Yudhvir Manak his son could not emotionally cope with his father being unwell and was sitting in his car when his father passed away whilst the rest of the family was around him.

Born on 15th November 1949 in the village of Jalal in the district of Bathinda, Punjab, India, Manak was a member of musical family. Manak was of the tradition and caste of entertainers, known as Marasis. His ancestors were the hazoori raagis of Sikh religious songs for Maharaja Hira Singh of Nabha, one of the Phulkian states in the Punjab.

From recording his first song at the youthful age of 17 in 1968 with with Seema, ‘Jija Akhian Na Maar Vemain Kal Di Kuri’ to collaborating on Bhangra albums, Manak leaves us music that caters for everyone.

Goldkartz grabs a staggering 9 nominations at VIMA Award 2011 !

VIMA 2011

VIMA 2011 music awards final nominees list.

The Bite My Music team have just announced the final nominees of the 3rd annual VIMA music awards, the only independent music awards for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei and is considered as one of the most important music awards in Asia.

VIMA 2011 have sprung a whole range of thrills and spills with both GoldKartz and K-Town Clan of Malaysia, the runaway leaders in the final nominee list . Goldkartz and K-Town Clan raked in an astonishing 9 nominations each. Goldkartz, considered the biggest bhangra-dance act of SouthEast Asia pulled in some industry heavyweights such as Awie, Boy Radge, Rishi Rich and Shankar Mahadevan to deliver their most stunning effort to date.K-Town Clan, one of Malaysia’s leading hip-hop groups (and only Malaysian crunk group), returned after 6 years, with stunning effect to deliver the goods even in the rock and dance categories.

K-Town had this to share:

“For us, being nominated for 9 awards is already a huge achievement. Its truly an honor to receive that many nominations as well as being nominated alongside so many talented artist’s/musicians. Though we have a long way to go, 6 years of struggle to come up with our first album was worth it and we can slowly see our different goals and dreams materialize. We wish all our fellow nominees for VIMA 2011 all the very best and keep making good music & if anyone says otherwise, GIVE EM THE UGHH!!”

“Every year we live right on the edge, feeding off the adrenaline and creative juices of the best of what the indie scene has to offer. We’re super happy that we were not let down this year, and we’re going to be seeing quite a few names go on from this stage and on to the global stage to finally carve their names on the international level. It has always been our hope that the musicians from this region will produce quality artists to take on the world, and we believe, this year, we are going to see that happen” said Siva “Zaphod’ Chandran, founder of VIMA and Bite My Music Global Awards.

Acts from Singapore and Brunei notched quite a chunk of the nominees too. While Brunei once again dominated in the pop categories,Karacoma carries the flag in the rock category with their hard-edged rock style. Singapore acts such as Lady Kash & Krissy and Kevin Lester did well in the hip-hop categories while In Each Hand a Cutlass and  CC Sound Factory walked away as strong contenders too. On the Malaysian front, Altimet, Dragon Red, Prema Yin, Haze and Psycho Unit all did well to land nominations in key categories. Altimet, One of the biggest winners of the first VIMA, is featured in 4 songs by 4 different artists (K-Town Clan/Andi Merican/Blink&Goldfish/Diplomats of Drum). On a lighter note,in the Best rock vocalist, it could be a face-off between the 3 “Sam”, with 3 acts named Sam – Sam Karacoma, Sam Bunk Face and Sam Beat The System.

GOLDKARTZ Bhangras Into VIMA 2011

The Bite My Music team had the opportunity to get an exclusive interview with Goldkartz, the hottest Bhangra act in Southeast Asia. When you think Goldkartz, all kinds of adrenaline-pumping and party filled imagery fills the room. Here’s what the golden siblings from Malaysia has to share:

GOLDKARTZ is a Bite My Music Gold Member and has submitted their songs for VIMA 2011

1. Tell us a little a bit about Goldkartz, what sort of music you perform, and the story behind the name of your group.

Goldkartz is an Urban Bhangra outfit from Malaysia consisting of 2 brothers, M-Ji & Surj. We have been on the production circuit of Urban Bhangra track since 2005 and launched ourselves in Malaysia in 2008. We just had our international debut in early April this year with the launch of our second album ’24 Karaatz’.

Goldkartz simply refers to Gold + Carats of Gold. The more the Carats, the more pricey it is. Gold being a scarce commodity, is always appreciated, and the same with our music. We just fused them both and stylised it into Goldkartz. Although we never intended to call ourselves Goldkartz, but people began recognising us with the name and we never looked back since then.

2. We understand you have made inroads in UK and are you planning to do a tour there?

Yes, 24 Karaatz is labelled by the biggest label in the Bhangra World, Moviebox that is based in the UK which distributes to the UK, Canada, India, and other European continents. As for now, we are busy promoting and touring around in the South East Asia region promoting our album. We are scheduled to perform and tour in the UK in November, and Australia in December this year. Ever since the launch, we have performed and toured at Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China, India and so on.

3. Goldkartz have played to very large audiences around the globe. Could you share with us your most memorable performance.

We enjoy just about every show that we perform at. If we were asked to choose the most memorable one, it would be a show that we had in Australia before the launch of our international debut, the second album.

We were totally blown away the moment we went up on stage performing seeing the audience singing along to just about every word of some of our hit tracks, bearing in mind our first album was only released in Malaysia and nowhere else. So seeing a different bunch of crowd, thousands of miles away singing to our track, was just an amazing experience.

We also had pretty much the same experience in Canada. It was then that we felt it was about time to get on with the second album and hopefully to launch it internationally.
